The Evolution of Engine Control Systems (ECS)

(A Message from the Founder, Rudi de Beer)

Engine Control Systems (ECS) was built around a product range originally supplied by FW Murphy, now known as Enovation Controls. My first encounter with Murphy and their product offerings dates back to the early 1990s.

Before ECS even existed as an idea, I began my career working for a company called Amalgam Tool & Gauge, installing basic engine protection systems. This was a time when I was working alongside my father, and I later took on the responsibility of running this division of the business. Unfortunately, Amalgam Tool & Gauge ceased operations, but I knew the future lay with Murphy products. I was determined to continue working with their range and attempted to secure funding to start my own business. However, finding investors proved to be incredibly challenging.

I then joined Field Auto Electrical (FAE), where I worked for nearly six years. During my time there, I realized that despite my hard work and the arrangements I had in place, I would not be able to achieve my long-term goals. This realization led me to the decision to establish ECS. I had open discussions with FAE and FW Murphy about my plans, though, as you can imagine, they were not met with enthusiasm—especially given that I was just one person with limited funding.

In 2004, with financial support from a family member, one of my clients, and a loan secured against our home in Kempton Park, ECS was born. The early days were incredibly tough, especially since we had to pay Murphy upfront for stock before it would be shipped to South Africa, depleting our funds quickly. But with relentless determination and perseverance, we made it work.

In the beginning, it was just the two of us—my wife, Maxie de Beer, and myself. I handled the field service and installations during the day, often working late into the night to prepare for the next day, including packing stock for deliveries. Maxi took charge of the finances and invoicing. For the first few years, we worked tirelessly, seven days a week. Eventually, we realized we needed help and hired our first technician. Over time, the company grew exponentially, and today we employ nearly 300 people.

In 2020, after 16 years of running ECS, I made the decision to step aside and pass the leadership to my son, Raynier de Beer. While many questioned whether he was ready due to his age, I knew it was the right time. I had complete faith in him, and he has proven me right. With the support of his wife, Jenny, and their dedicated team, I am confident they will continue to build on the legacy we have created and take ECS to even greater heights.

As we approach our 21st year of providing top-tier engine control systems, I offer this piece of advice to anyone who doubts themselves: believe in yourself, trust in the guidance of your Maker, and pursue your dreams with relentless hard work. Success will follow.
